Depicts the social conditions under which slavery operated and their impact on those who were slaves; the part which slavery played in the developing American economy; the efforts of individual slaves to free themselves form slavery; propaganda used by abolitionists and by pro-slavery groups; and opportunities which were open to persons freed from slavery at the end of the Civil War.</abstract>
