Engravings, paintings, maps, cartoons, etc. provide primary source materials by which to understand the cultural environment of the institution of slavery. Depicts the social conditions under which slavery operated and their impact on those who were slaves; the part which slavery played in the developing American economy; the efforts of individual slaves to free themselves form slavery; propaganda used by abolitionists and by pro-slavery groups; and opportunities which were open to persons freed from slavery at the end of the Civil War.
